An education loan is often the difference between an offer letter and an enrolment. Yet most students approach it backwards, accepting the first sanction they are offered instead of comparing the terms that will follow them for the next decade.
Secured versus unsecured
Secured loans, backed by property or deposits, typically carry lower interest and higher limits. Unsecured loans are faster and need no collateral, but cost more and cap lower. The right choice depends on the size of your funding gap and what you can pledge without putting family security at risk.
Read the moratorium carefully
The moratorium is the grace period during study and shortly after, before full repayment begins. The detail that catches families out is whether interest accrues during that window, and whether paying even a small amount monthly through it dramatically reduces what you owe later.
- Compare the effective rate, not the headline rate, across at least three lenders.
- Confirm exactly when repayment starts and whether interest builds before it.
- Check processing fees, prepayment penalties, and currency assumptions in writing.
The cheapest loan is rarely the one with the lowest advertised number. It is the one whose terms you fully understood before signing.

Line up funding before you accept
Visa applications for most destinations require proof of funds held for a set period, so financing cannot be left until the last week. Begin loan conversations the moment you have a conditional offer, and you remove the single most common cause of deferred intakes.
