The first month abroad is exhilarating and disorienting in equal measure. Most students overestimate the admin and underestimate the adjustment. A short, ordered list of priorities turns an overwhelming week into a manageable one.
Week one essentials
- Collect your residence documents and complete any required police or university registration.
- Open a local bank account; many cities let you book this before you fly.
- Get a local SIM so you are reachable for housing and campus updates.
- Locate your nearest pharmacy, grocery store, and the cheapest route to campus.
The part no checklist covers
Somewhere around week three, the novelty fades and a flat, homesick stretch arrives. This is normal, almost universal, and temporary. The students who move through it fastest are the ones who built small routines early: a regular call home, one society or club, a familiar meal they can cook.
Homesickness is not a sign you chose wrong. It is the cost of having something worth missing.

Ask for help sooner
Every campus has international student services, counselling, and academic support, and they are busiest with students who waited too long. Using them in your first month, before anything has gone wrong, is the habit that quietly separates a smooth year from a hard one.
